Stand with Children Project Suspended
Continues January 2009

To avoid confusion and distraction from the ProtectMarriage.com campaign, Catholics for the Common Good has suspended work on Stand with Children until after the California election to restore the definition of marriage between a man and a woman. Stand with Children is a project to build a broad educational coalition to promote marriage and the family as a matter of social justice. In May 2008, the California Supreme Court overturned the will of the people and nulified the definition of marriage. This cleared the way for same-sex "marriage" open to anyone throughout the United States.

New Onerous Provision Added
Advocate Defeat of AB 2747
SAN FRANCISCO, July 9, 2008 --  While a significant victory was achieved when the platform for suicide provisions were removed from AB 2747 (see details below), the bill is still fraught with problems warranting strong opposition. Priest Cleared but Others Fined
Accused of Exposing Homosexuals to Hatred
TORONTO, JULY 8, 2008 -- The Canadian Human Rights Commission has closed its case against Father Alphonse de Valk, the editor and publisher of Catholic Insight magazine [but not before leaving the priest with $20,000 of legal bills]. What was the basis of the charge? The Catechism?

Same-Sex "Marriage" and the Persecution of Civil Society
Advocates of same-sex “marriage” present the idea as a step forward for tolerance and respect. But recent developments place that interpretation very much in doubt. Legalizing same-sex “marriage” is not a stand-alone policy, independent of all the other activities of the state. Once governments assert that same-sex unions are the equivalent of marriage, those governments must defend and enforce a whole host of other social changes.

The Lay Catholics' Moment on Marriage
"Help Them with Prayer"
Now is the moment for the sleeping giant of the Catholic laity to step up, with the grace and power of the Holy Spirit, and be the salt, light and leaven God wants with regard to the gift of marriage God has given us.

How California Court Undermined Marriage
The law serves as a moral compass for cultural values. If showing preference for unions of men and women is bigotry in the eyes of the law, it will also become bigotry in the eyes of society.

EUGENE, OR, June 3, 2008 - When Barbara Wagner of Springfield, Oregon learned that the Oregon Health Plan did not cover her life-prolonging cancer treatment drug her oncologist prescribed, the letter of denial advised her that the assisted suicide would be covered. According to the Register Guard, Eugene Wagner said "I think it's messed up", as she burst into tears.
